Proverbs 3:1-2  My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

The problem that Israel had which caused them to keep turning to idolatry in the Old Testament was their forgetfulness. God blessed them and made a nation of them, yet they often forgot who made them so great. They repeatedly forgot all that God had done for them and that is what caused them to turn to pagan religions, gods, and rituals.

When they forgot the bounties of God He would punish and allow their enemies to bring them into servitude. Then God would show mercy and raise up a leader to deliver them and bring salvation. As long as they followed God they were blessed with silence from their enemies. In the book of Judges alone we see them repeatedly fall into the same routine of rebellion, retribution, repentance, restoration, and rest. Surely the Lord’s mercy endures forever.

America today has a serious problem. Just like Israel America has forgotten and abandoned the Lord who made her so great.  The arrogance of a people who would rebel against the one who made them the greatest superpower on the planet earth; America’s problem is a heart problem. Our country has deteriorated because not only has she forgotten God, her children today do not even know who God is.

Our deterioration has led us to the point of depravity. There are rampant drug and alcohol addictions and many are taken by the sin of lewd and lascivious behavior. Your name, a handshake, and a smile mean nothing anymore without a 20 page contract to back it up. Murder has become a commonplace thing in so many places. Mass murders are on the rise and all anybody can offer for solutions is to blame anybody and anything other than the person or persons who committed the crime. You cannot trust the media or the government to give you the whole truth anymore because they are clueless as to what is wrong.

What is wrong with America is that she has a problem with forgetfulness. There is so much that is wrong; so many are playing the blame game. The real problem with our nation is in the heart. We told God that we could do a better job of raising our kids without Him and His Word in our public classrooms. We forget that the schools were started by godly people in the church house. Many of our major universities and colleges that will not allow the Bible or Christ Jesus talked about on campus were started by Christians.

We told God that we could handle sin without His help or input into the life of a sinner. We have every kind of interdiction and rehab program that you can think of and yet they are full of people who are repeat patients. Whatever the addiction - sexual, drug, alcohol, eating disorder, etc. - there is a program. Not only do we have better programs, we have better drugs for all that ails you. Yes, even drugs for those who are trying to kick the drug addiction problem.

Our children today are killing each other in the streets and in the classrooms because as a nation we have forgotten God. We turned from Him to our own ways and forgot all that He did for us in the beginning. Now our children do not know God because we took them away from Him. We forgot the warnings in His Word; that He would not bless those who forgot Him and all His benefits. We have sown to the wind; we will reap the whirlwind.

Whatever you do, remember God’s commandments, promises, and blessings and give Him thanks. Be grateful that you are delivered from the penalty of sin, you are being delivered daily from its power, and you will be delivered from its presence. Thank God that even though our nation has forgotten Him, He will never forget you. -Preacher
