Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Chastening is for correction of ignorance. We do not know everything all at once when we are saved. We are new born babes in Christ who need proper upbringing to become a mature Christian. So the Lord uses chastening to correct and instruct our ignorance so that we may stay safe in the world.
Scourging is for the correction of disobedience. When we know the truth and do not follow the truth then God will use scourging to bring us back to proper behavior. Scourging refers to spiritual spanking; this may be whatever the Lord has to use to get your attention. It may be something physical with your health, some spiritual defeat, some financial difficulty, or some other hardship that will cause you to repent and get back where you need to be with the Lord.
You do the same thing for your children. You must teach them right and wrong, teach them the benefits and the consequence, and then you must enforce the rules and guidelines for proper behavior. You may chasten them with rebuke and stern warnings first, but if they continue to do wrong then the punishment will get a little harsher each time. Physical punishment – spanking - should be a final punishment, not the first.
God has given us His Word to set the parameters of our behavior. His Word is good and profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. Doctrine is instruction to believe the right things. These are the basic fundamental truths of His Word. These cannot be compromised for any reason whatsoever. If you compromise doctrine you sin against your holy and benevolent Father.
Reproof is rebuke of wrong doing to convict of sin. The Spirit of God will use the Word of God to convict you of sin. He does this so that you will repent and get right. If you keep falling into the same trap you may cause God to bring harsher punishment against you. But the sooner you repent and get right the easier it will be on you. By the way, the Lord does not enjoy punishing His child, but He does it out of love because He wants to prosper you in life.
Correction gives us solutions so that we might stay and live right. He does not just give you reproof without giving you a solution to your problems. The reproof warns you that you are in the wrong; you have broken the parameters of good behavior. You need to repent and obey His Word. Now He tells you what you need to do to stay right so that you may consistently obey and live right. You must learn from your mistakes.
Instruction is training and teaching so that we can help guide others in the right paths. God so graciously allows those who have walked in the paths of wisdom to invest into your life through teaching a Bible class, mentoring through setting a right example for you, preaching, and giving counsel in navigating through difficult times. Do not be weary of His correction or punishment. Your Father loves you with infinite, sacrificial, undeniable, unconditional love. His desire is to protect and prosper you in life so that you can have the best He can give you.
When you have come to a place of spiritual maturity, then you can teach others and help them. You ought to have a daily diet of God’s Word so that you can know right, get right, stay right, and teach right. -Preacher
